“With a history spanning over 3,000 years, Sri Lanka is home to some of 

the world’s ancient cities, including Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and 

Digamadulla. These once-glorious townships, featuring intricately carved 

palaces, temples, monasteries, hospitals, and theaters, now lie 

abandoned and forgotten amidst soaring jungles.

Among all the ancient cities of Sri Lanka, 

Anuradhapura stands out as the most famous and exquisite. 

Known as the country’s third and longest-serving capital, it is recognized 

as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in

 the world and holds great significance as a sacred city for Buddhists.

 Serving as the capital from the fourth century BC until the eleventh 

century, Anuradhapura was a stable and durable center of political 

power and urban life in South Asia.

Additionally, Sigiriya, a fifth-century AD fortress and water garden, is 

celebrated for its futuristic landscaping elements and some of the oldest 

murals recorded in the country. 

These ancient sites showcase Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage and 

attract history enthusiasts from around the globe.
