Main Info
Amarnath Yatra
The Amarnath Yatra is one of the most significant Hindu pilgrimages, drawing millions of devotees each year to
the Amarnath Cave in Jammu and Kashmir.
This cave, located at a staggering 3,888 meters (12,756 feet)above sea level, is renowned for its natural ice Shiva
Lingam, a symbol believed to represent Lord Shiva.
In this article, we will explore various key aspects of the Amarnath Yatra, from its religious significance to the
challenges faced by pilgrims during the journey.
1. Routes and Journey
Next, the yatra offers pilgrims two primary routes to reach the Amarnath Cave. One of the most commonly used
routes is the Pahalgam Route, which spans approximately 45 kilometers. Starting from Pahalgam, it passes
through scenic yet challenging terrains such as Chandanwari, Sheshnag Lake, and Panchtarni, before reaching
the cave. On the other hand, the Baltal Route is significantly shorter (around 14 kilometers) but is steeper and
more physically demanding. This route starts from Baltal, a base camp situated near Sonamarg. Despite being
shorter, it still presents its own set of challenges due to the steep climb and often unpredictable weather conditions.
2. Duration and Timing
The yatra typically lasts for 40 days, beginning in late June or early July and culminating on Shravan
Purnima in August. Consequently, pilgrims plan their journeys around this period when the ice Shiva Lingam is
most visible. However, due to the high altitude and cold temperatures, the pilgrimage requires meticulous planning,
proper physical preparation, and, most importantly, the right equipment.
